Research Program

The research program of the PHOTONS group at SUBATECH concentrates on the study of nuclear matter thermodynamics. The phase diagram (density versus temperature) of nuclear matter is explored by colliding heavy ions which kinetic energy is varied to approach the critical regions. At low bombarding energies, from a few ten to a few hundred of A MeV, the phase transition from liquid to gas is searched for; at higher energies, from a few hundred of A GeV to a few A TeV, the phase transition from hadronic matter to a plasma of quarks and gluons is under study.
Once nuclear matter is heated and/or compressed to extreme values, the experimental challenge consists in the selection of several observables which convey adequate information on the thermodynamic state of the state of nuclear matter under study. It appears very unlikely that the choice of a single observable is sufficient to draw unambiguous conclusions on the characteristic properties of the state of matter. It becomes therefore unavoidable to correlate several observables . We follow such an approach by selecting photons as a probe of the initial and hottest stage of the collision and light mesons as a probe of the later or hadronic stage ...(more.. in french).

The group is involved with the following collaborations:

  • TAPS, the Two Arms Photon Spectrometer for the detection of photons from a few hundred of keV up to a few GeV, emitted in heavy-ion collisions from a few ten of A MeV up to a few A GeV.
  • WA98, an experiment at CERN for the simultaneous detection of photons and charged as well as neutral hadrons produced in a few hundred A MeV heavy-ion collisions.
  • PHENIX, one of the large experiment at RHIC at BNL oriented mainly towards the detection of photons and di-leptons.
  • ALICE, a heavy-ion experiment for the future LHC, the hadron collider at CERN.
