Carnac is the most famous and the largest megalithic site in France.
This site dates back to some seven thousand years when people started to move
stones and to place them in the landscape, stones of up to 180 tons in weight.
For what reason we don't know, despite many theories. The remnants of this
culture - spread over thousands of miles mostly along the sea coasts - don't
explain much. The common archaeological opinion says that the dolmens - artificial caves built of stones and
stone plates - were made for burial purposes. For the standing stones - the menhirs
- there isn't any reasonable explanation.
To select a name for the on/off line project for
PHENIX we retain the idea of
huge (mega) and tried to keep the Egyptian tradition of phenix (KARNAK is also
an ancient city of Egypt).
The direct link is however the idea of building many
objects (the menhir) and bring them together to form a project (the megalithic
site). We certainly know for which reasons we build such a project and to avoid
that people around us and after us have to build theories on the use of the
project we take the engagement to document thoroughfuly whatever we do.
