The E299 experiment: Ar+X @ 95 AMeV

Search of the Mott effect in nuclear matter

---

Goals of E299 experiment:
  • Search for the formation of bound p-n pairs (deuterons) formed in the nuclear medium during heavy-ion collisions. The threshold momentum, or Mott momentum, for the formation of deuterons will be measured. Photons are used to time the early formation of deuterons via radiative capture of a neutron(proton) by a proton(neutron).
  • Hard photons with energies above 30 MeV are measured in coincidence with deuterons. Correlated deuteron-gamma pairs will be discriminated against uncoreelated pairs by exploiting the typical pattern resulting from the existence of the Mott momentum.

Experimental set-up:
  • TAPS ("Two-Arm Photon Spectrometer"). BaF2 electromagnetic segmented calorimeter for photon detection covering 20% of 4.
  • Block G An additional TAPS block equipped with a fast plastic scintillator and positionned at zero degree with respect to the beam direction.
